About Us


We’re new(ish) to the world of bicycles, and we’re learning as we blog. The blog is named for the vintage loop-frame stepthrough (aka ladies’) bicycles that are our first love, and was started as a record of our restoration, craft, and research projects associated with old bicycles. However, as we’ve gained experience we’ve also developed strong interests in cycling infrastructure and advocacy. We prefer to ride in our everyday clothes, and sometimes we organize group rides.
The LFL Coblogging Collective are Deborah and Angel (in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada) and Jennifer (formerly of Edmonton and Seattle, now in Boston). From time to time we also have guest-posts from other friends who have interesting bicycles to share.

Deborah on Eliza ('78 rod-brake Raleigh DL-1) at Edmonton Tweed Ride


Deborah is an ex-academic, textile artist, board member of The Local Good, and mother of two working toward living car-light in the southwestern suburbs of Edmonton. She also blogs about the slow movement on Sustainable Slow Stylish. She has a weakness for vintage bicycles. Her fleet has included Eliza (a ’78 rod-brake 3-speed Raleigh DL-1, kitted out for grocery runs, above), Trudy (a ’72 Phillips 3-speed with a Bobike Junior installed for family rides), and Mary Poppins (a ’66 Phillips single-speed-coaster) and Bert (a ’75 Canadian Raleigh 3-speed) who are both on loan to friends at the moment. Works-in-progress are Winnie (’51 CCM-built Garry, needs coaster hub fixed), and Rhonda (late-40s Rollfast with 20-inch wheels) and Fio (60s Eaton’s Glider with 14-inch wheels) who are both being rebuilt by our friend Keith for her daughter. Her garage also houses a bike each for her husband and kids and a big bin of parts. She still hasn’t gotten a winter bike or her midlife-crisis-bakfiets. Someday.




Jen is a protein biochemist, former Ballard Greenways advocate, bicycle commuter, and mother of one living car-light in a central neighborhood of Boston after stints in Regina, Edmonton, Denver, New York City, Seattle, and a car-dependent exurb in California. Her fleet includes a mid-tail for commuting and shopping, a road bike for fun, a mountain bike for family rides with the Burley Piccolo attached (above, via Seattle Critical Lass), and a Viva Kilo that Deb keeps pestering her to document on the blog. She judges the usefulness of bikes by their ability to bring home take out or pie.


Angel on Daisy


Angel is a mother of two working once again toward living car-light in Edmonton’s southeastern suburbs, now that her broken wrist has healed. Her vintage fleet includes Daisy (a ’70s “ProTour” mystery bike that’s had a mamachari conversion), and Ella (a Sears Free Spirit mixte). Works-in-progress are a CCM Galaxie (needs new tires), Gino and the Foldy Twins (who all need a coaster hub fix), and Free Loading Bike (a mountain bike destined for winter bike glory).

    I just found your site. I think it is a great website and what you are doing with these bicycles is great. Love your bicycle no matter what anyone else thinks.

    I was particularly interested in stanley-the-blackhawk-mystery-bike. I also have a blackhawk loop, frame only. Trying to find a fork and other parts. The headbadge on mine is different and ‘Made in England’ is painted on the frame.

    I believe that BlackHawk and SilverHawk bicycles were a brand name of Marshall-Wells (hardware stores?). Your bicycles headbadge has an ‘MW’ logo, which might stand for Marshall-Wells. Marshall-Wells probably got their bicycles from a variety of suppliers over the years, the same as many other Canadian department/chain stores.
